A Quilt for JZ!
Malachi's Quilt

Finally I finished this one--nearly two years in the making. Ack! Delays included packing and moving and selling my sister's house; putting our house on the market which made us declutter, clean, and pack up things for storage; my workload at work tripled; I severely pulled a tendon in my right wrist that took nearly 6 months to fully heal; and we moved into a brand new home. All in all--little Malachi was lucky to get this before his 2nd birthday. LOL.

About that layout to the left...
Here are ideas for colors. Basically I was thinking of primary colors. And muslin for the background of each square.
Kites (K) -- red kite tops, various primary colors for the tails
Pinwheels (P) -- shades of blue
Stars (S) -- shades of yellow
I thought we might use fabrics from our own stashes, rather than buying any new fabric (the economy you know).
Prints or solids??? I wrestled with this one. I sort of want to use prints because I have so, so many. And if we use solids we might end up with some clashing colors. What do you think?
And for the back of each quilt we could buy one print together (along with lunch at La Madeleine next to G Street) so that from the back the quilts would look the same. The fronts would be different in subtle ways and the twins would have to figure out which belonged to whom (is that right? been away from editing for too long).
So that's a lot of questions for you Ms. S!!
Happy Halloween! Hope Dyson and Justin are a HUGE hit tonight. (If you send me a picture I'd love to post it on the blog...maybe one of those cute ones you used on the postcard.)

This quilt needs a good name.

Shannon, Margo H, and I are making round robin quilts.* Margo's quilt is finished, but Shannon and I are still working on ours. In this one, Shannon did the center square, then Margo and I each added borders. Shannon added one border and now it's in my hands. I'm working on what could be the last border (you can see a tiny bit of it on the right side).
*Definition of round robin quilt (from http://www.scarlettrose.com/round.html): "To start, everyone makes a block for the center. There can be all kinds of rules for size, color , theme, etc. The blocks are passed to someone else in the group. They add the first border. Then the next quilter adds the second. This usually continues until there are three borders that have been sewn by three different quilters. The quilter who made the center block then gets the quilt top back to keep and finish."

"New" old quilt
I finally got back to quilting! It took a new baby to make it happen. (My daughter's friend and coworker Ann had a baby on Thursday--don't even know his name yet.) I made this top from squares that were hand-pieced by a great great aunt sometime before the mid-1950s. Just last night I started quilting the top. Feels SO good!

I found it!

I believe Pam and I completed this quilt in the fall of 2003--just in time for our co-worker Natalie's first baby. We had a lot of fun working on this one--from picking out the fabrics to designing the blocks. It involved a lot of tiny little squares and triangles. This quilt was indeed a collaboration as we used parts of a pattern but we also made up our own "parts" and, of course, the quilting is all unique. Natalie still tells me how much little Sarah enjoys looking at this quilt--even nearly 5 years later.
